Is your infant touching everything in sight? Does it seem like most of the surfaces they explore are store-bought? Give them something unique to grab on to with our Infant Texture Board!
This tactile craft enables infants to explore various textures through safe, soft materials mounted on a sturdy board. It encourages early sensory engagement and helps build neural pathways through touch.
When my son was a toddler, I created a “busy board” that included various sensory puzzles for him to play with (post coming soon). While infants can’t work out latches and locks yet, it doesn’t mean they can’t enjoy their own version of this fun and engaging board!
The key here is to keep your items infant-friendly. That means avoiding sharp and heavy objects and reducing the likelihood of choking in case any of your materials comes off the board.
First, let’s take a look at why this craft is not only fun but beneficial to your infant’s development!
Developmental Benefits:
- Sensory Stimulation: Engages tactile senses through varying textures.
- Fine Motor Development: Builds hand coordination as your baby grasps, pats, and swipes.
- Cognitive Growth: Introduces cause-and-effect as they feel and react to different materials.
- Language Development: You can label textures (“soft,” “rough,” “bumpy”) to build vocabulary through repetition.
- Self-Awareness: The mirror encourages facial recognition and social-emotional bonding.
How To Get Started:
Supplies Needed:
- Sturdy cardboard or foam board (at least 8×10 inches)
- Soft fabric swatches (e.g., velvet, felt, fleece, satin, burlap, corduroy)
- Craft glue or double-sided tape
- Large pom-poms
- Cotton pads or cotton balls (create cloud bundles)
- Ribbon or yarn pieces (large bunches, tied together to create a large “rope”)
- Optional: Velcro strips for removable textures
- Baby-safe mirror (small, unbreakable)
- Scissors (for adult use)
Directions:
- Prepare the Base: Cut the cardboard or foam board to the desired size.
- Arrange the Textures: Lay out your fabric swatches and other textured items in separate sections on the board. Variety is key!
- Helpful Tip- Cut your swatches into various shapes (circles, triangles, and squares) to add another element of educational fun.
- Secure the Materials: Using glue, tape, or Velcro, affix each item firmly to the board. Make sure everything is baby-safe and well-attached.
- Add a Mirror (Optional): Secure the baby-safe mirror with Velcro strips to one corner for visual interest and self-recognition.
- Create Exploration Time: Introduce the board during tummy time or seated play. Encourage your infant to touch and explore each section.
Disclaimer: This activity requires constant parental supervision to prevent the risk of choking. Items can be pulled off the board and will likely go straight into your infant’s mouth. When your infant is done using the board, store it away in a safe space (an area that your future toddler cannot reach) to prevent future accidents.
