Leaf Critters

Aim for multi-colored leaves and use your imagination to create lovable creatures!

A Seasonal Craft For Early Elementary

Fall is fast approaching! What better way to celebrate, than to gather up those freshly fallen leaves and create something whimsical? Leaf Critters are creatures made from real autumn leaves, transformed with googly eyes, markers, and a dash of creativity.

Your kids will love turning a maple leaf into a fox, an oak leaf into an owl, or a birch leaf into a fish! Each critter becomes a character in their own seasonal story.

Bonus craft: Use those fallen leaves to create spooky spiders and leaf monsters for Halloween!

Why It’s Perfect for This Time of Year

Fall is nature’s art studio! Depending on where you live, the ground is covered in vibrant reds, yellows, and browns, offering a free and ever-changing supply of materials. This craft encourages kids to explore outdoors, observe leaf shapes and colors, and celebrate the beauty of the season.

Note: If you live in an area that doesn’t experience a seasonal leaf-drop, have no fear! You can utilize any leaves for this craft (minus the poisonous ones). If you wish to change your leaf colors, paint the leaves or purchase faux leaves at your local craft store.

Benefits for Early Elementary Kids

  • Fine Motor Skills: Gluing, drawing, and arranging leaves strengthens hand coordination.
  • Creativity & Storytelling: Encourage your kids to invent characters and narratives around their critters.
  • Nature Appreciation: Turn this craft into a nature lesson by building awareness of seasonal changes and plant diversity.
  • Sensory Engagement: This craft combines texture, color, and shape in a hands-on experience.

Time To Create!

Supplies

  • Assorted real leaves (fresh or pressed)
    • You can even purchase faux leaves from your local craft store!
  • Googly eyes (various sizes)
  • Washable markers
    • Faux leaves may require permanent markers. Please supervise your child to prevent any unwanted art from becoming a permanent fixture in your home 🙂
  • Hot glue gun with glue stucks (adult use only), glue stick or liquid glue
  • Construction paper (for background)
  • Safety scissors (optional for cutting details)
  • Pipe cleaners or small cutouts (optional for tails, antennae, etc.)
  • Popsicle sticks (optional for puppet fun!)

Directions

  1. Collect Leaves: Go on a nature walk and gather leaves in different shapes, sizes, and colors. The more variety you have, the more unique your creatures will be.
  2. Design Your Critter: Choose a leaf and imagine what animal or creature it could become.
  3. Add Features: Glue on googly eyes, draw noses, mouths, wings, or feet with markers.
  4. Create a Scene: Glue your critter onto construction paper and decorate the background.
  5. Optional Add-ons: Use pipe cleaners for tails or antennae, and cut small paper shapes for ears or beaks.
  6. Bonus Option: Glue your leaves onto popsicle sticks and create fun leaf “puppets” for your child to play and interact with.
