Today we’re going to focus on your infant’s visual and sensory needs with a simple and easy craft, using items you find around the house. While this activity uses multi-colored balls, you can actually use anything that grabs the attention and focus of your infant.
Blocks, plushies, teething toys, and all infant-friendly items can be used as “drop” items to entertain and captivate your little one. *If you choose to use items other than the balls mentioned in this post, skip the funnel, as these items are unlikely to fit properly down the tube.
Why It’s Beneficial
The Sensory Ball Drop encourages infants to:
- Track moving objects with their eyes, strengthening visual pathways.
- Build focus and attention span by observing cause and effect.
- Explore textures and colors, enhancing sensory integration.
- Develop early motor coordination as they reach, bat, or grasp.
This activity is ideal for tummy time, seated play, or high-chair engagement.
Let The Fun Begin!
Supplies
- 1 clear plastic container or bin (shoebox-sized or larger)
- 1 wide funnel or cardboard tube (paper towel roll works!)
- Note: Skip the funnel if using other items, other than sensory balls. Instead, use your hand as a fun “claw” to drop each item.
- 4–6 soft sensory balls (e.g., textured, crinkly, or high-contrast) or other infant-friendly toys.
- Note: Be sure items are large enough for your infant to mouth, should they begin reaching and grabbing, without posing a choking hazard.
- Optional: colored tape or stickers to decorate the funnel or bin (making sure your infant’s view is unobstructed.
- Optional: suction cups or Velcro to secure the funnel to the container
Directions
- Prepare the Drop Zone Attach the funnel or tube to the top edge of the container so balls can drop through easily. Secure with tape, Velcro, or suction cups if needed.
- Decorate for Engagement Add bold colors or patterns to the funnel to catch baby’s attention. High-contrast visuals (black, white, red) are especially effective for younger infants.
- Introduce the Balls Choose balls with varied textures, sounds (like crinkle or rattle), and colors. Show baby how a ball drops through the funnel and lands in the container.
- Encourage Interaction Let baby watch you drop each ball slowly. Pause to let them track the motion. For older infants, offer a ball to grasp and drop themselves.
- Repeat & Explore Change the angle, speed, or type of ball to keep interest high. Narrate the action: “Here comes the bumpy ball… whee!”
