Create your own personalized witch hat headband to suit your style!

With Halloween around the corner, I wanted to post one more whimsical craft for your early elementary students. Last night my family indulged in one of my favorite movies: Hocus Pocus, so today we’re going to bring that magic into the craft room.

These whimsical mini witch hats perch playfully on headbands, turning little ones into spell-casting cuties in seconds! Your kids will decorate their own hats with stars, glitter, and spooky flair. Afterwards, they can wear them proudly for co-op parties, trick-or-treating, or imaginative play.

Developmental Benefits

Creating witch hat headbands supports key early childhood skills:

  • Fine Motor Skills: Cutting, gluing, and decorating help to strengthen hand-eye coordination and dexterity.
  • Spatial Awareness: Assembling 3D shapes helps kids understand form and structure.
  • Creative Expression: Choosing colors, textures, and decorations fosters imagination and decision-making.
  • Social-Emotional Growth: Wearing their creations boosts confidence and encourages role play and storytelling.
  • Following Directions: Step-by-step crafting builds listening and sequencing skills.

Let The Magic Begin!

Supplies

  • Black construction paper or cardstock
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick or tape
  • Glitter, stickers, sequins, or foam shapes
  • Ribbon or tulle (optional)
  • Headbands (plain plastic or fabric)
  • Pencil
  • Stapler (optional for sturdier assembly)

Directions

  1. Make the Hat Cone
    • Cut a half-circle from black paper (about 8 inches wide).
    • Roll it into a cone and glue or tape the edge to secure.
  2. Create the Hat Brim
    • Cut a circle (about 5 inches wide) from black paper.
    • Cut a smaller circle in the center to fit the cone’s base.
  3. Assemble the Hat
    • Glue the cone onto the brim. Let dry or secure with a stapler.
  4. Decorate
    • Add glitter, stars, foam shapes, or spooky stickers.
    • Tie ribbon or tulle around the base for flair.
  5. Attach to Headband
    • Use tape, glue dots, or hot glue (with adult help) to secure the hat to the headband.
    • Position it off-center for a whimsical tilt!
