No-sew felt pie slices
Use brown, orange, blue, and purple to create your favorite pie slices!

Me-oh-my, I love pie! With the holiday season upon us, those scrumptious pie dishes will soon be filling your kitchen and your belly. While you’re gearing up to taste your favorite pie dishes, let’s give your toddler a pie they can enjoy all year round!

These adorable felt pie slices are soft, safe, and full of sensory delight! Your toddler will have a blast layering felt “crust” and “filling” to create pretend pumpkin, apple, or berry pies.

And don’t forget the topping! We’ll add fluffy cotton ball whipped cream for an extra layer of fun! It’s a cozy, confidence-building activity that invites storytelling, fine motor practice, and seasonal joy.

Why It’s Perfect for Toddlers

  • No sharp tools or sewing required! Just safe materials and simple steps.
  • Encourages creative expression through color choices and pretend flavors.
  • Offers tactile exploration with soft felt and squishy stuffing.
  • Supports independent success with easy-to-grasp pieces and forgiving assembly.

Developmental Benefits

  • Fine motor skills: Pinching, pressing, and layering felt pieces help prepare your toddler for writing.
  • Sensory integration: Exploring textures like felt, cotton, and stuffing.
  • Language development: Naming pie flavors, describing textures, and storytelling.
  • Emotional regulation: Calm, repetitive motions and pretend play foster soothing engagement.
  • Cognitive growth: Sequencing steps, color matching, and imaginative role-play.

Let’s Get Cooking Crafting 🙂

Supplies

  • Brown felt (for crust)
  • Orange, red, blue, or purple felt (for fillings: pumpkin, apple, berry)
  • Pie filling materials (see step 2 in “Directions”)
  • Cotton balls (whipped cream)
  • Fabric glue or glue stick
  • Child-safe scissors (optional for adult prep)
  • Optional: pom-poms, glitter glue, or cinnamon sticks for decoration

Directions

  1. Prep the Pie Shapes Cut felt into triangles (about 4–5 inches wide) for pie slices. Each slice needs one brown triangle (crust) and one colored triangle (filling).
  2. Add Thickness to Felt Pie Slices
    • 1. Layer Multiple Pieces of Felt
      • Cut two identical triangles for each slice (one for the top, one for the bottom).
      • Add a thin layer of polyfill stuffing, cotton balls, or scrap felt between them.
      • Glue the edges together to create a soft, dimensional slice. Don’t forget to let your toddler help out!
    • 2. Use Foam Sheets or Cardboard Inserts
      • Sandwich a piece of craft foam or thin cardboard between two felt triangles.
      • This gives structure and thickness without bulk, making it easier for toddlers to grip.
  3. Add Whipped Cream Glue a cotton ball to the center or edge of the slice as a dollop of whipped cream.
  4. Decorate (Optional) Add pom-poms as berries, glitter glue for syrup, or cinnamon sticks for scent.
    • Note: Choose toddler-safe products and always ensure your additions are adequately fixed before each play session.
  5. Play & Pretend Use the finished slices for pretend baking, serving, or storytelling. Encourage toddlers to “make” different flavors and share with family or stuffed animals.

Disclaimer: As with any toy, these felt pie slices may lose pieces and parts if not secured properly. Always supervise your toddler during playtime and check that all pieces are properly secured before and after you play. These pie slices may look good enough to eat, but no portion of this craft is edible, nor should it be consumed by your toddler.
