Add as much “snow” as you like to your personalized cotton ball snowmen!

Cotton ball snowmen are a cozy winter craft where your preschooler will glue fluffy cotton balls onto paper or cardboard to build a snowman. Afterwards, you can decorate it with simple materials like buttons, felt, or construction paper. The soft texture of cotton balls makes the snowman tactile and inviting, while the decorating stage sparks imagination and creativity.

Why It’s Suitable for Preschoolers

  • Simple steps: Gluing cotton balls and adding decorations are easy, low-stress tasks, making this craft a great choice for calm afternoons.
  • Safe materials: Cotton balls, paper, and glue are non-toxic and preschool-friendly. Just be sure to supervise to ensure cotton balls aren’t mouthed or eaten.
  • Open-ended creativity: Kids can personalize their snowman with colors, shapes, and accessories.
  • Quick success: The craft comes together fast, giving children a sense of accomplishment in a short amount of time.

Developmental Benefits

  • Fine motor skills: Pinching cotton balls, squeezing glue, and placing decorations strengthen finger muscles.
  • Sensory exploration: The soft, fluffy texture of cotton balls engages tactile senses.
  • Creativity & imagination: Choosing accessories and designing the snowman fosters self-expression.
  • Sequencing & focus: Following steps builds attention span and understanding of order.
  • Language development: Talking about the snowman’s features encourages descriptive vocabulary.

Let The Crafting Begin!

Supplies Needed

  • White cotton balls
  • Construction paper or cardboard (blue background works well)
  • Glue stick or liquid glue
  • Googly eyes
  • Buttons, sequins, or pom-poms (for decoration)
  • Felt or colored paper scraps (for hats, scarves, noses)
  • Crayons or markers

Directions

  1. Prepare the base: Give each child a sheet of construction paper or cardboard.
  2. Build the snowman: Glue cotton balls in three stacked circles (large, medium, small).
  3. Add a face: Glue on googly eyes, a paper triangle nose, and draw a smile.
  4. Decorate: Add buttons, scarves, hats, or mittens using paper scraps or felt.
  5. Background fun: Draw snowflakes, glue sequins, or add cotton “snow” around the snowman.
  6. Show & tell: Invite kids to share their snowman’s name or story to build language skills.
