Choose your favorite baby food, yogurt, and pudding brand for this fun and intentionally messy craft.

Edible finger paint art is a great idea for infants because it encourages sensory exploration, creativity, and early motor skill development in a safe and engaging way.

Here’s why we recommend this fun and engaging edible finger paint craft for your infant:

1. Safe for Tasting

Infants naturally explore the world by putting things in their mouths. Using edible ingredients like yogurt or baby food ensures that if they taste the paint, it’s completely safe.

2. Encourages Sensory Development

The textures, colors, and movement of the paint help infants engage their senses. Feeling the cool, smooth paint and watching it spread across the paper enhances their tactile and visual experiences.

3. Supports Fine Motor Skills

Smearing, dabbing, and moving their fingers through the paint strengthens hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. This handy activity will help build essential skills for later activities like grasping objects and writing.

4. Introduces Early Creativity

Even at a young age, infants can begin to express themselves through movement and color. This activity allows them to explore cause and effect—seeing how their touch changes the artwork.

5. Mess-Free Option Available

If you prefer a cleaner version, the paint can be placed inside a sealed ziplock bag for mess-free fun, still providing sensory stimulation without cleanup concerns.

6. Strengthens Bonding Time

Participating in this activity together allows you to engage with your infant in a fun, interactive way, fostering connection and communication.

Ready To Get Painting?

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • Plain yogurt or baby food (for paint base)
  • Natural food coloring (or fruit/vegetable purees for color)
  • Large sheet of paper or highchair tray (finger painting paper works best)
  • Painter’s tape or masking tape
  • Gallon-size Ziploc bag (if opting for the mess-free option)

Directions:

  1. Take your baby food, yogurt, or pudding and mix in your choice of food coloring. You can also use food that is naturally colored if you wish to skip the additives.
  2. Grab a sheet of paper and tape it onto your child’s highchair or feeding area with painter’s or masking tape.
    • Note: If you are choosing the mess-free option, you can cut your paper to fit inside of the Ziploc bag.
  3. Place blobs of “paint” onto your child’s painting surface (inside of the bag is opting for mess-free).
  4. Let your infant explore their space by encouraging their hands to spread through the paint.
    • Remember to close your Ziploc before having your child play with the bag if you wish to keep things clean.
  5. Take pictures of your child’s masterpiece, both on the paper and on themselves!
  6. Let your paper dry in a safe place!
