Creating coffee filter poppies is a quick and easy craft for early elementary students. Your children will enjoy learning about color blending with this nature-inspired activity.

Ready To Get Started?

Supplies Needed:

  • Coffee filters (white, standard size)
  • Washable markers (red, orange, and pink for petals; black for center)
  • Small cup of water
  • Paintbrush or spray bottle
  • Black or yellow construction paper
  • Green pipe cleaners or straws
  • Scissors
  • Glue or tape
  • Safety Pin (optional)

Directions:

  1. Color the coffee filter
    • Use red, orange, or pink markers to color the entire filter. The more coverage, the better!
  2. Blend the colors
    • Lightly brush water over the filter or spray it with a mist of water to let the colors spread. Let it dry completely.
  3. Create the poppy shape
    • Once dry, you have the option to either cut or gently scrunch the filter to create a ruffled flower shape.
  4. Make the center
    • Cut a small circle from black or yellow construction paper and glue it to the middle of the filter.
  5. Attach the stem
    • Tape or glue a green pipe cleaner or straw to the back of the flower.
  6. Display or wear
    • Use the poppies as a decorative display, a wreath, or attach a safety pin to wear them.
