Choose vivid paint and glitter colors for an eye-catching galaxy jar

Are you looking to captivate your late elementary students with an awe-inspiring craft? Look no further! This Galaxy Jars craft is full of color and wonder, leaving your children with a fun-filled sensory experience!

Galaxy Jars have mesmerizing layers of cotton, glitter, and color that mimic the look of space in a jar. They’re perfect for exploring texture, color blending, and a bit of astronomy inspiration too.

Why This Craft Is Out Of This World:

Developmental Benefits

  • Creative expression: Kids choose colors and design their own “galaxy” layout.
  • Fine motor practice: Scooping, pouring, and layering all target hand coordination.
  • Scientific curiosity: Great launchpad for talking about stars, nebulae, or even light refraction.
  • Sensory integration: The texture of cotton and shimmer of glitter offers multisensory engagement.

Preparing For Launch!

Supplies

  • Clear mason jar or plastic container with lid
  • Cotton balls
  • Water
  • Liquid watercolor or diluted acrylic paints (various shades)
  • Glitter (fine and chunky mixes work well)
  • Optional: glow-in-the-dark stars or confetti

Directions

  1. Prep Your Colors: In separate cups, mix paint with water to get desired transparency. Aim for vivid colors like purple, blue, pink, and teal.
  2. Start the Layers: Place a layer of cotton balls into the bottom of the jar, then drizzle with one paint color.
  3. Add Sparkle: Sprinkle glitter over the wet layer so it sticks.
  4. Repeat: Continue layering cotton, paint, and glitter until the jar is full. Alternate colors to create a swirling galaxy effect.
  5. Seal & Display: Screw on the lid tightly. Decorate the outside with glow stars, stickers, or a custom label for added fun!
