Oh, February…how quickly you remind us that we’re faced with yet another gift-giving holiday. Didn’t we just have one of those a couple of months back? Still, with all of the themed items stocking the shelves, there’s nothing that feels particularly personal, making gift-giving feel a bit disconnected.
Enter, homemade gits.
I would rather craft a heartfelt gift than buy something in a store any day. It’s thoughtful, budget-friendly, and sends the message, “hey, not only did I think of you, but I planned something special.”
Today, we’re going to get a little help from your infant, with a warm, simple Valentine’s activity designed specifically for them!
Why This Craft Is Developmentally Beneficial
Infants are just beginning to explore textures, colors, and cause‑and‑effect. In this craft, your baby will use large, soft foam heart shapes as stamps dipped in non‑toxic paint to create a one-of-a-kind Valentine’s masterpiece.
Baby-safe heart stamping supports several early developmental skills. Let’s take a look at a few below:
Fine Motor Exploration
Infants practice grasping, releasing, and bringing objects to a surface. All of these exercises serve as early building blocks for later writing and self‑feeding skills.
Cause-and-Effect Learning
Your infant will begin to understand that “when I press this shape down, a mark appears,” which is foundational cognitive development.
Sensory Processing
The cool feel of paint, the squish of foam, and the visual contrast of bright colors help babies explore sensory input in a safe, controlled way.
Visual Tracking & Attention
Watching the heart shape appear on paper encourages focus, curiosity, and early visual‑motor coordination.
Bonding & Emotional Connection
Because this craft is done hand‑over‑hand or with close supervision, it naturally creates a warm, connected moment between caregiver and child.
How To Turn This Craft into a Gift
Heart-stamped artwork makes a meaningful, personal Valentine’s gift. You can:
- Turn the stamped paper into a card for a parent, grandparent, or sibling.
- Cut out the stamped hearts and glue them onto a keepsake frame.
- Add a sweet message like “Made with tiny hands and lots of love.”
- Create a mini banner with multiple stamped pages clipped to ribbon.
- Use the stamped background for a loving framed photo gift.
It’s heartfelt, simple, and full of the baby’s personality.
Let’s Get Started!
Supplies
- Large foam heart shapes (easy to grasp)
- You can either purchase heart-shaped foam painters, or you can make them by cutting various heart shaped pieces out of a large, soft sponge.
- Non-toxic, washable paint (pink, red, purple, or pastels)
- Shallow tray or paper plate for paint
- Cardstock or thick paper
- Baby wipes or damp cloth for cleanup
- Optional: smock, bib, or towel under the workspace
Directions
- Prepare the stamping area. Lay down a towel or mat and place cardstock in front of the baby.
- Set up the paint. Pour a small amount of washable paint into a shallow tray.
- Introduce the foam heart. Let the baby explore the foam heart with their hands first by touching and squeezing with supervision.
- Model the stamping motion. Dip the foam heart lightly into the paint and press it onto the paper to show your baby what happens.
- Support your infant. Offer hand‑over‑hand guidance if needed, or let them freely tap, press, or drag the heart across the page.
- Create a pattern or let it be abstract. Both are developmentally appropriate and beautiful.
- Let the artwork dry. Once dry, turn it into a card, cut-out, or keepsake gift.
