Let’s Create A Tiny World Of Our Own!

Mini terrariums are such a great craft for preteens+ because they offer a ton of creative freedom. Your kids will get to design their own tiny landscapes, picking out colors, textures, and themes that reflect their personality or mood.

It’s also surprisingly calming; arranging moss, soil, and little decorations can be a mindful, almost meditative process that helps them slow down and focus. Plus, there’s a cool STEM angle: they’re learning about ecosystems, humidity, and how plants thrive, all while building something beautiful.

Benefits For Your Preteen+ Child:

  • Supports fine motor skills through careful placement and layering. Your child can use their hands or tweezers to place items into their terrarium.
  • Boosts concentration & attention by encouraging focus and patience, as your child works to build a world of their own.
  • Encourages responsibility if live plants are used. Proper placement and watering will allow your child to witness the reward of consistent care when their plants begin to grow.
  • Fosters imagination as each terrarium can be designed to tell a story or reflect your child’s interests.

Let’s Get Crafting!

Supplies Needed:

ItemNotes
Glass jar or clear containerMason jars, spice jars, or recycled candle holders work well for this craft.
Small pebbles or gravelFor your decorative base layer. It also helps with drainage if you use living plants.
Activated charcoal (optional)This will help prevent mold if using live plants, but it is completely optional.
Potting soil (optional)A thin layer above the charcoal helps provide nutrients to your live plants.
Moss (live or preserved)Adds texture and greenery
Mini figurines or decorationsThink fairies, animals, mushrooms, crystals, or seashells.
Tweezers or spoonFor the precise placement of your child’s chosen items.
Spray bottleTo lightly mist the moss if you choose to use live plant material.

Directions:

  1. Prepare the Jar. Clean and dry your glass container thoroughly. We want to make sure that whatever remnants left over from it’s previous use are removed entirely.
  2. Layer the Base. Add a layer of pebbles for drainage. If using live moss, sprinkle a thin layer of activated charcoal on top.
  3. Add Soil. Spoon in a layer of potting soil, just enough to support moss or small plants.
  4. Place Moss or Plants. Use tweezers to gently position moss or tiny succulents. Press lightly to secure.
  5. Decorate. Add figurines, crystals, or themed items. Create a scene like a forest glade, fairy garden, or alien planet.
  6. Mist Lightly. If using live moss, mist it with water to keep it hydrated. Avoid overwatering…this can lead to mold growth.
  7. Display & Enjoy! Place your terrarium near indirect light, if using live plants.
