Simple ingredients for a sensory-filled craft!

Pumpkin spice and everything nice- this play dough is a warm, aromatic twist on classic homemade dough that’s perfect for little hands and curious noses. With its soft texture and comforting scent of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves, it turns sensory play into a seasonal celebration.

Why Toddlers Love It

  • Multi-sensory experience: Combines touch, smell, and sight with rich fall colors and cozy aromas.
  • Safe and simple: Made from kitchen staples, it’s non-toxic and toddler-friendly.
  • Supports development: Encourages fine motor skills, creativity, and early pretend play.
  • Calming effect: The warm spices can have a soothing, grounding influence during transitions or quiet time.

Let’s Begin!

Supplies

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 2 tablespoons cream of tartar
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice (or a mix of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves)
  • Optional: orange food coloring or natural dye (like turmeric or beet powder)

Directions

  1. Mix dry ingredients: In a large pot, combine flour, salt, cream of tartar, and spices.
  2. Add wet ingredients: Stir in water, oil, and food coloring.
  3. Cook over medium heat: Stir continuously until the mixture thickens and forms a dough ball (about 3–5 minutes).
  4. Cool and knead: Remove from heat, let cool slightly, then knead until smooth.

Disclaimer: This playdough may smell great, but it should not be eaten due to it’s high salt content. Please make sure to supervise your toddler at all times.

Storage Options

  • Store in an airtight container or zip-top bag.
  • Keep in a cool, dry place (not refrigerated).
  • Add a few drops of oil if it starts to dry out.

Shelf Life

  • Lasts 2–3 weeks with proper storage.
  • Discard if mold develops or texture changes significantly.
