Leave enough room on the outside edge to add your child’s name or the date.

My favorite infant crafts offer engaging play for your little one, while also leaving you with a precious keepsake. This craft does just that. I’m sure you’ve seen plenty of store-bought kits for handprint ornaments, but today we’re going to make our own!

All of the supplies are likely in your pantry and kitchen already, saving you time and money on this adorable craft. Don’t forget to make extra for your little one to grab and smash with supervision!

Why This Craft Works for Infants

  • Keepsake Value: This craft captures your child’s tiny handprint at a stage that changes quickly, allowing you to use it as a memory marker.
  • Sensory-Friendly: Infants enjoy the feel of soft dough. You can help them identify what they are feeling as they play and explore.
  • Safe & Simple: This craft is made from basic kitchen ingredients, so it’s non-toxic.
    • Note: Non-toxic does not mean it is edible. Avoid consumption.
  • Bonding Activity: While you do most of the work with this craft, your infant contributes the best part!

Let’s Make A Memory

Supplies

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 1 cup water (add gradually)
  • Mixing bowl & spoon
  • Rolling pin
  • Cookie cutter or bowl (to shape circle)
  • Straw or skewer (to poke a hole for hanging)
  • Non-toxic paint (optional for decorating)
  • Ribbon or string

Directions

  1. Make the Dough
    • Mix flour and salt in a bowl.
    • Slowly add water until a smooth dough forms.
  2. Roll & Shape
    • Roll dough to about ½ inch thick.
    • Cut into a circle (or desired shape).
  3. Add Handprint
    • Gently press infant’s hand into the dough to leave an imprint.
    • Use a straw/skewer to poke a hole near the top for hanging.
    • Add any other details you’d like, such as their name or the year.
  4. Bake
    • Place on a baking sheet.
    • Bake at 200°F (93°C) for 2–3 hours until hardened.
    • Alternatively, air-dry for several days.
  5. Decorate (Optional)
    • Once cooled, paint the ornament with non-toxic paints.
    • Add glitter glue or write the child’s name and year.
  6. Finish
    • Thread ribbon/string through the hole.
    • Hang on the Christmas tree or gift to family.

Important Reminder

This craft is:

  • Non-toxic: It’s made from flour, salt, and water…all safe if touched or mouthed by infants.
  • Not Edible: DO NOT CONSUME. The high salt content makes it unsafe to eat. If ingested, it can cause stomach upset. Always supervise infants during the craft.
